Map activities after dark
Mark dining, reading, cooking, steps and the route back into the house. Identify where useful light is needed and where bright fixtures would create glare for seated people or neighbors. Ask for separate control of activity lighting and background lighting where that suits the brief.
Locate switches or controls where people naturally enter and leave. Think about guests, nighttime trips and loss of a remote control. A system that looks good in a rendering should also be straightforward to operate.
Confirm environmental suitability
Ask the installer to identify the exposure category for each fixture and fan location and verify the selected product’s listing and instructions. Hunter’s guidance distinguishes fans for covered damp environments from those intended for direct weather exposure.
The relevant question is whether the exact product suits its actual location, including wind-driven rain or other exposure. Do not treat outdoor in a product name as a complete specification. Confirm compatibility of controls and accessories as well as the main fixture.
Coordinate mounting, clearances and electrical scope
Have qualified professionals assess mounting support, available power, circuit needs and required protection. Ask them to coordinate fans with roof framing, ceiling details, furniture and lighting locations. This is design and installation work for the relevant trades.
If a pool or spa is nearby, make it explicit in the brief so the professionals review the applicable electrical and safety requirements. Do not position equipment from a generic patio layout.
- Activity and route served by each light.
- Fixture and fan model, exposure suitability and controls.
- Mounting support and project-specific clearance review.
- Wiring routes and access before ceilings close.
- Permits, inspections and responsible trades.
- Lamp, driver or equipment service access.
Review operation at handover
Ask for a demonstration after dark where practical. Check whether the light reaches the intended task without unwanted glare and whether controls are labeled or intuitive. Have the installer address adjustments within the approved scope.
Keep manuals, model information and warranty documents. Ask which routine cleaning can be done safely and which tasks need a professional. The result should support comfortable outdoor use with a clear maintenance plan, rather than maximizing the number or brightness of fixtures.
