Draw the furniture before fixing the enclosure line

Place the dining table, seating and storage at realistic sizes. Show chairs pulled out and doors in use. Trace the route from the house to the yard so guests do not have to pass through a tight furniture gap.

Consider everyday activities beyond entertaining: taking pets out, carrying garden equipment, cleaning and reaching exterior equipment. An enclosure that fills every available corner may create inconvenient service routes or leave no practical open yard.

Review views and daylight in both directions

Look from indoor windows toward the proposed enclosure and from seating toward the garden. Ask how posts, beams, screen divisions and roof elements affect the view. Review privacy alongside openness, especially near neighboring windows or gathering areas.

Ask the supplier to explain the selected screening’s intended function and maintenance. Do not assume every mesh provides the same visibility, airflow, durability or insect-control performance. Obtain the actual product information for comparison.

Have the complete structure assessed

Have the team review supporting construction, attachment locations, roof arrangement and drainage. An existing slab or patio cover should not be presumed suitable for a new enclosure without assessment.

Ask the designer and permitting authority which requirements apply to the property and proposed scope. Florida’s code and product resources help locate relevant documentation, but a product listing does not decide a site-specific design.

  • Door placement and routes to the yard.
  • Furniture movement, cleaning and maintenance access.
  • Structural supports and existing-construction assumptions.
  • Roof runoff, thresholds and adjoining paving.
  • Screen specifications and replacement access.
  • Future work that could be obstructed.

Test the boundary before committing

Where practical, mark the proposed enclosure outline on the ground without disturbing utilities or construction. Walk the access routes and visualize the remaining yard. Ask for revisions while the decision is still on a drawing.

If a pool is involved now or later, have a qualified team evaluate pool-safety requirements separately. An insect-screen enclosure should not be assumed to satisfy the required safety arrangement. Keep the final plan explicit about its intended use, approved design and maintenance responsibilities.
